Terminus is Now Olares

Today marks a significant milestone in our journey: Terminus is becoming Olares. This transformation goes beyond a simple name change — it reinforces our foundational mission to “let people own their data again”.
Previously on Terminus
Our story began with Terminus, inspired by Asimov’s Foundation series. Like the sanctuary planet at the edge of the galaxy, we set out to create a digital frontier where individuals could truly own and control their personal data. We built Terminus as a free, source-available cloud-native operating system that transforms everyday devices into powerful home clouds.
As we evolved, we recognized that our mission extended beyond creating a secure operating system. We needed to build a comprehensive platform that would help individuals and businesses effectively manage their data, operations, and digital lives.
Introducing Olares
Our evolution to Olares marks a new chapter in making sovereign clouds accessible to everyone. Just as the Roman Lares protected their households, Olares protects your digital sovereignty. Whether you’re an individual concerned about privacy or an organization seeking data independence, Olares provides the tools you need to take control of your digital future.
The name Olares now represents our complete sovereign cloud solution:
- Olares (formerly Terminus or Terminus OS)
An open-source, self-hosted alternative to public clouds. It is a sovereign cloud operating system that helps people regain ownership of their data through a permissionless application marketplace. - Olares ID (formerly Terminus Name)
Your decentralized identity within the ecosystem that handles authentication for all applications. To ensure continuous service access, your Terminus Name domain will remain effective. New sign-ups via LarePass getolares.comas the domain. - LarePass (formerly TermiPass)
A client software that enables secure communication between your devices and Edge nodes. - Olares Space (formerly Terminus Space)
A cloud offering of Olares that provides core infrastructure services.
For our user
The rebranding has been systematically implemented, with the majority of updates completed in Release 1.10. This comprehensive update includes our GitHub repositories, system components, and core services, ensuring consistency across the platform.
For users running Terminus 1.9, we recommend a clean installation of Olares 1.10 for the best experience.
We’ve also undertaken a comprehensive documentation refactoring effort to enhance usability and readability. The improved documentation structure makes it easier to understand and implement Olares’s features. Stay tuned as we continue to roll out these rebranding updates.
