What is Olares?

Olares is an open-source personal cloud operating system designed to empower users with local AI capabilities and private, self-hosted services. It allows you to transform your hardware into a powerful AI personal cloud for running cutting-edge AI models, managing personal data, automating your home, and hosting decentralized apps.

What’s new in 1.12.3?

Flexible folder sharing for collaboration

This update introduces more flexible options for sharing folders with internal users and external collaborators. You can now create shares using three distinct modes, each suited for different use cases:

  • Public Links: For sharing files with anyone on the internet. You can secure these links with a password, set an expiration date, and control whether visitors can upload files, including setting file size limits.
  • Internal Shares: Securely share folders between users on the same Olares system.
  • SMB Shares: For making folders accessible on your local network. These can be configured for open access or restricted to specific user accounts.

To help you manage access, all active shares are now consolidated in a centralized Share list. This provides a single place to review and manage all active shares, making it easier to audit permissions or revoke access.

Faster GPU reassignment for apps

For systems with multiple GPUs, you can now reassign an application from one GPU to another more quickly. The new Switch GPU option is available for GPUs operating in Time Slicing or App Exclusive modes.

Olares manages the underlying process based on the hardware topology:

  • Same-node switching: When moving an application to another GPU on the same machine (node), the application binds to the new GPU while retaining the old one, creating a multi-GPU configuration for that app.
  • Cross-node switching: When moving an application to a GPU on a different node, the application’s container is automatically migrated to the new host machine.

Customizable file indexing and search scope

You now have more control over the file search engine. Instead of a single global index, you can define rules to include or exclude content, making search results more relevant.

  • Exclude files from indexing: Use regular expressions (regex) to create exclusion rules. This allows you to hide system logs, temporary files, or specific directories from search results.
  • Enable full-fext search: For specific folders containing important documents, you can enable full-text search. Olares will index the content of files including PDFs, Markdown, and DOCX within these designated folders. The rest of the system will continue to use filename-only indexing to maintain system performance.

See Configure file search for more details.

Run multiple instances of an application with cloning

You can now run multiple, isolated instances of the same application. From the My Olares section, the Clone feature allows you to create distinct copies of an installed application

This is useful for developers or advanced users who need separate environments, such as running one instance of a Windows VM for development and another for production testing. Each cloned instance operates independently with its own name, desktop shortcut, and environment variables.

Improved user experience for Wise

Wise is a local-first reader that turns your scattered digital content into a secure personal knowledge base within the Olares ecosystem.

This release streamlines the entire content-saving workflow for Wise. The new Add link feature acts as a central hub for adding new content. From a single input, you can subscribe to RSS feeds, save articles to your library for later reading, or download content directly.

Additionally, the integration with the LarePass browser extension has been enhanced. Saving webpages, especially from sites that require a login, is now more reliable and seamless. These improvements work together to simplify access to paywalled articles and subscription-based content, ensuring your personal library stays up-to-date with minimal effort.
